Help our families transition from “House” to “Home.”
When families leave the Ronald McDonald House, they’re often heading home to an empty fridge. Making a grocery list or preparing dinner is the last thing on a parent’s mind. That’s why we’ve launched our new House to Home program which provides homeward-bound families with everything they need to settle in, including oven-ready frozen casseroles.
You can help us by assembling casseroles in our Ronald McDonald House kitchen. It’s a great way to involve your team or family in a quick mid-day volunteer project. You bring the ingredients; we have all the kitchen tools and appliances you might need!
As a House to Home volunteer, you will:
- Sign up for an available date below
- Choose from the recipes on this page
- Shop for the ingredients
- Prepare the casseroles at the Ronald McDonald House (in pans we provide for you)
- Have memorable and fulfilling experience with your friends, family and coworkers
Who can participate?
- Maximum of 10 volunteers
- All volunteers must be at least 12 years old and actively participate.
- Volunteers must be completely illness/symptom free (cold, flu, fever, stomach virus, etc.) for at least 14 days prior to volunteering.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I cook?
We ask groups to choose from the recipes listed below. These recipes have been pre-selected because they freeze and reheat well. Most recipes make enough for 2 casseroles. Feel free to make more if you’d like.
Who supplies the ingredients?
Your group will shop for and bring the groceries to the Ronald McDonald House. That said, you are welcome to call us and ask what is currently in our pantry. We usually have a good supply of spices and staples.
Should I shop for the cassarole pans as well?
Nope! We have some excellent, heavy-duty, disposable pans that can handle both freezing and reheating. We’ll get you the right pans for your recipe(s) when you arrive.
What is the process?
- After your group has selected a recipe and shopped for the ingredients, you’ll assemble the casserole here at the Ronald McDonald House.
- All food handling must be done on premises or in a commercial kitchen.
- There is no need to actually bake the casseroles. Since they will be frozen immediately after you assemble, you do not need to bake and then cool the casseroles during your visit.
- That said, please make sure that all proteins are thoroughly cooked through. You may even wish to save some time by bringing, for instance, a rotisserie chicken in stead of cooking from scratch.
- Once you are done, we will attach the recipe and reheating instructions to each casserole so that the families can take them home.

I began my journey with RMHC in 2014 when I was hired as a Weekend Manager. In that position, I spent a lot of time talking to our families and learning about their stories and the barriers that they face. This insight helped me transition to my new role of Family Support Specialist. In this role, I have the opportunity to work closely with our families and create new programs to assist them while they are staying at the House, as well as when they are ready to transition home. It is my privilege to work for such an amazing organization that is dedicated to putting our families first.
